Wireless Home Theater and Controlling Your System Through the Walls

Today I received an interesting phone call from a lady who called herself  "Dawn." She asked me if I was busy at the time and I told her that I was busy. However, she insisted I explained to her the technology of wireless home theater and help her with what she needed to install in her home. I tried to explain to "Dawn" that I couldn't help her over the phone and needed to see her home. She insisted I was unprofessional and mentioned the fact that she had money and would not refer anyone to my business. She also said that "my generation has a problem." Bottom line...I can't make everyone happy as hard as I try.

Patience is a virtue! If she had just waited a few hours, she would have received the benefits of allowing me to sit down and provide valuable information to our loyal and potential customers in a relaxed, non-stressful environment. This blog is for everyone like Dawn who wondered about wireless home theater, wireless audio, and home theater design.

Wireless Home Theater

Whether you like it or not, the use of audio and video interconnects will remain for several years to come. Quality, security, and pricing, are among the main issues manufactures of wireless home entertainment systems have to work out before this technology can be delivered at a price that appeals to the mass-market.

This does not mean that wireless technology is not already providing a helping hand in the home theater and home entertainment. Full PC/home theater integration through a wireless solution is already easily achieved.

True wireless home theater is still the unattained ideal many home theater owners would love to achieve. But thanks to advancement in wireless technology, things are changing fast; wireless audio systems have become better, cheaper, faster, and easier to use and install.

However... As things stand today, the term 'wireless' in the audio and video world does not mean 'wireless' - it just means 'less' wires.

Controlling Your Home Theater Through Walls

There are a lot of different remotes out there. The main reason why people enjoy them so much is that they enable you to control all of the components of your home theater system with a single remote. No more looking everywhere for that one remote that's gone missing. The universal remote market is about to get a bunch of new remotes, thanks to radio frequency technology.

What does this mean for you? It means that with a RF remote, you can control your components without needing a line of sight, like you needed with IR remotes. Even more so, a RF remote will let you control your home theater from anywhere in the house. For now, the only remote available with RF technology is the Logitech Harmony 900. Well, it's the only off-the-shelf model actually. You can get custom systems that have these types of remotes, but you'll end up paying thousands of dollars to get it.

This new Logitech remote uses an IR blaster system, enabling you to control your system through walls, thanks to RF technology. You won't need any extra gear to make this work. On top of that, the Harmony remote is easy to setup and control. It also comes with a touchscreen. The only bad thing about this remote is that it costs $400. For that $400, you get the remote and three IR blasters to control your home theater system. The IR blasters are placed on the same shelves as your components. When they receive an RF command, they'll relay it over IR to the components in your home theater, since that's the only wavelength that they understand.

The Harmony has an easy Web-based setup. The touchscreen is quick to respond and delays are small. One great thing about this technologically advanced remote is that it looks like any other remote. It's not a touch panel with gazillions of options. It's easy to use and setup. We think that if you've been hunting for one remote to control all of your systems, even from other rooms, this is the remote to get. If you don't need to do this, there are a bunch of other remotes on the market that would suit your needs. We can think of many different applications. For example, if you have many different rooms wired for sound this one remote would enable you to control your system without having to go back into the home theater area.

Wireless Speakers
The most common wireless product that is available for home theater are wireless surround sound speakers. However, don't let the term "wireless" fool you. For a speaker to function it needs two types of signals. First, the speaker needs to have access to the music or movie soundtrack in the form of electrical impulses (the audio signal). Second, the speaker needs physical connection to an amplifier to actually produce the sound (either powered by battery or AC power outlet).

In a basic wireless speaker setup, a transmitter is physically connected to preamp outputs on a receiver. This transmitter then sends the music/movie soundtrack information to a speaker that has a built-in receiver. However, in order to produce the audio signal that is wirelessly transmitted so you can actually hear it, the speaker needs additional power.

This means that the speaker still has to be physically attached to a power source and an amplifier. The amplifier can be built into the speaker housing or, in the case of some setups, the speakers are physically attached with speaker wire to an external amplifier that is powered by batteries or plugged into the house AC power source.

In other words, you may have eliminated the long wires that typically go from the signal source, such as a stereo or home theater receiver, but you still need to connect the "wireless" speaker to its own power source in order for it to actually produce sound.

Currently, wireless speaker technology is employed primarily in all-in-one home theater-in-a-box systems, but Summit Wireless has demonstrated a very good sounding wireless speaker system that utilizes their wireless transmission platform combined with a powered speaker system that is available from Aperion Audio. Watch for more wireless speaker products using Summit Wireless, or similar, technology.

Wireless Subwoofers
One new development that is getting attention as a practical wireless solution for home theater is employing a wireless powered subwoofer. Since subwoofers are typically self powered (the required connection to AC power) and they are sometimes located far from the receiver they need to receive the audio signal from, incorporating a wireless transmitter for the subwoofer into the receiver and a wireless receiver into the subwoofer is a very practical idea.

Of particular interest in wireless home entertainment is the effort by a few manufacturers like Linksys, D-Link, Creative Labs, etc., with their wireless digital media players.

Wireless digital media players represent a great solution in home entertainment. For around $250, it is possible to get access to video, photo and music files from anywhere within the home network, whether it being your home PC, internet, etc. Just set up a wireless digital media player and you will be able to use your existing TV or home entertainment system to play digital audio and video files. Media players come with a remote control and an on-screen menu for easy access of digital content through your TV screen.

But even if you have a computer with Windows Media Center, you can use your Xbox 360 or a Media Center Extender to stream TV, digital audio and video, photos, and more.

Interesting is that most of the latest HDTVs and AV systems include DLNA support - meaning that once you load the appropriate software on your PC, you can access your home network to browse your media files, etc. straight from your TV without the need for a digital media player.

Yet... while it is true that wireless media players and DLNA support on AV gear provide ease of integration of audio and video data accessible via your home network, there is still no complete wireless home theater solution many dream of where all audio and video systems within the home are interlinked through a wireless setup.
